Expect Changes in the Common App Next Year

The Common App, used by a growing list of over 480 colleges, has definitely changed the college admissions landscape, and it's about to make some more changes for next year's applicants. Whether or not colleges or counselors agree, they are doing away with the "topic of your choice" essay questions, requiring students to select from four or five essay prompts that will change from year to year. Here are a few more changes that you may notice on August 1, 2014, when the Common App is expected to go live next year:

  • Essays that go under or exceed length requirements will receive an error message when uploaded.
  • There will be no way to upload a resume unless a school specifically requires it.
  • There will be updates to the user interface hopefully making it faster and easier to use.
