University of Notre Dame Releases 2012-2013 Essay Questions

University of Notre Dame released a preview of its 2012-2013 essay questions. While it did away with one of our favorites, "You have 150 words. Take a risk," it added a few new creative, much less succinct prompts. This one could definitely lead to an interesting essay:

Gary Gaffney, ’69MS, began doctoral work in mathematics at Notre Dame but left to become an artist, eventually earning two degrees in fine art. His poem “Mil Preguntas (a meditation in 1000 questions)” explores a myriad of topics, using queries both whimsical and profound. Some of our favorites are:

• What is consciousness?

• What is your deepest mystery?

• What’s the last honest question you asked yourself?

• How often has humanity led you to forgive?

• What makes you dream?

• Is being ordinary a failure?

• What can’t you live without?

• Who convinced you about God?

• Can you tell the story of faith put to the test?

• Why should you care about the rings of Saturn?

• What will you never believe?

• What will you always believe?

Provide your own answer to one of the author’s inquires and be sure to tell us which question you select.

University of Notre Dame Releases New, Riskier Question for the 2011-2012 Application

Will you take a risk when you write your essays?

Schools continue to release new essay questions or confirm that last year’s questions will remain the same for the new season.

For those California dreaming, you can get busy writing now that the University of California has confirmed that the questions will stay the same.

University of Notre Dame introduced new essay topics, and while we like the new options, especially “You have 150 words. Take a risk.” students of a more observant and detail-oriented nature may have preferred last year’s topics including, “What is one small detail in the world that you notice and wish others did, too?” and “Tell us about a time when you have surprised others or yourself by doing something unexpected.”

If you’re applying to Elon University, we noticed that the online application does not list the designated essay topic required for those applying to its Gap Semester Program. The school has been notified, and the application will be fixed soon. In the meantime, check out the pdf of the application on the school’s site or use College Essay Organizer to seek out the question.
