Common App Facing its Most Difficult Period in its History

The Common App recently sent out an email to members in an attempt to gain back user trust, which has been slowly eroding following months of technological glitches leading to schools across the country beginning to extend early application deadlines. The letter describes how the Common App will begin revamping its approach:

"As an organization, we have been too slow to respond. That ends today. We have written this communication to highlight three core values of our mission, explain how we have fallen short in realizing them, and provide details about how we pledge to do better."

Members can now subscribe here for daily updates on the status of current glitches the Common App is working through. Unfortunately, many of the ongoing issues will not be fixed in time for early applicants. If you would like to know more about the Common App's issues and how to avoid them, you can log into your College Essay Organizer account and click on the Essay Access tab to register for our upcoming webcast on Oct. 29 at 8pm entitled, "The Common Mis-App: Avoiding the Glitches and Submitting in Style."

Duke University Extends Early Decision Deadline Due to Common App Glitches

Christoph Guttentag, the dean of undergraduate admissions at Duke University, recently sent an email about the deadline being extended from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8 to thousands of potential applicants. He also vowed to keep the mid-December decision notification date the same, increasing the pressure on admissions officers to complete their gargantuan task in less time. Dozens of colleges are expected to follow Guttentag's lead issuing the first known extension due to technological glitches (following a Hurricane Sandy-induced extension last year).

Will the Common App's struggles lead to schools finding other alternatives to the Common App next year? Click here to listen to  Guttentag's interview with Marketplace on this issue.

Common App Text Boxes Incorrectly Tallying Word Counts

As if students and colleges don't have enough on their minds already, here's another blunder by the Common App which continues to be fraught with problems since the launch of its new system on August 1. This year, the Common App requires that students paste their main essay into a text box to ensure that the length is not less than 250 words and no more than 650 words. While students have noticed numerous formatting issues and even parts of their essay missing when pasting text into the temperamental boxes, many are yet to notice that the boxes are not accurately counting the number of words being pasted in.

For those students pasting in from a text editor, you will escape this issue and many of the formatting issues as well, but for the majority of students pasting their essay from Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or another word processor, you may be shocked by the initial word count you see, which appears to reduce the length of an essay by as much as 70 words. But don't panic! After you've diligently removed all the additional spaces that the Common App added in, the word counts will display correctly. So as you deal with the myriad other Common App issues this season, definitely keep this one in mind.

Early Deadlines Being Extended Due to the Common App's Glitches

Colleges are appropriately responding to the many hurdles they and their students are facing due to the Common App's major glitches, with UNC and Georgia Tech both extending their early deadlines an additional week. The October 15th early deadline has opened up a whole new can of worms, revealing a host of additional issues to resolve before the even more popular November 1 deadline, from more missing questions (check your College Essay Organizer accounts to make sure you have them all) to sections of essays disappearing during transmission.

Whether or not a resolution will occur is up in the air, with many losing faith fast. While the Common App has admitted to issues, it has been in disagreement with members as to its extent. According to one student's comments, “4 different computers. 4 different locations. 4 different browsers. None work. Hmmm. Not systemic?”

Common App Issues Continue to Plague Students and Colleges Alike

According to this recent New York Times article, the Common App's continued difficulties are not only increasing the stress of students during the application process, but are also causing colleges grief by delaying access to submitted forms and applications. Jason Locke, associate vice provost for enrollment at Cornell University, complained, "It's [the application process] been a nightmare. I've been a supporter of the Common App, but in this case, they've really fallen down."

With early deadlines approaching and some already past, colleges are falling way behind schedule, unable to begin accessing thousands of waiting applications. Further, colleges are considering extending application deadlines along with their response times due to the numerous errors. Here are some issues to watch out for:

  • When pasting in your main essay or supplemental ones, be on the lookout (and leave lots of extra time) for numerous formatting issues.
  • Essay questions have been added to the Common App after applications were initially released, so make sure to check back before the due date to ensure that you have all the required, optional, program-specific, and scholarship questions that apply to you. We can't tell you how many members have thanked us at College Essay Organizer for alerting them to questions that they would have otherwise missed.
  • Preview and print functions have shown blank pages rather than displaying. Switching to a different browser may rectify this situation.
  • When paying the application fee, the mandatory signature page has been problematic, sometimes not showing up, causing students to think the application has been submitted when it has not.

SMU Alerts its Students of Common App's Challenges

As most of you know, the long-awaited CA4 was released by the Common App on August 1. This new system planned two years in advance with a multi-million dollar price tag was expected to further simplify the Common App for the millions of applicants relying on it. Unfortunately, it has been plagued by delays, setbacks, and technical difficulties since its launch. College Essay Organizer has been instrumental in delivering the Common App's often missing or hard-to-find essay questions to students so that they can be sure that their applications are complete when they finally get delivered to colleges. Please see this article for more details on the challenges the Common App has faced.

While the majority of Common App supplements are now appearing and can be submitted, in many cases, some colleges themselves are still unable to receive certain submitted applications. In an effort to alert its applicants and allay student fears, Southern Methodist University has notified students of the Common App's struggles to transmit applications to colleges.  Please see SMU's recent letter to students below:

Dear John,

I am pleased to learn you have added SMU to your list of colleges on The Common Application. We are looking forward to receiving your application to SMU!

As you may know, The Common Application has had some unusual challenges this year, and many colleges are having difficulty receiving information submitted through The Common Application in a timely manner. Today I write to reassure you that SMU is aware of these issues, and we understand the difficulties you may be experiencing. If you applied to SMU prior to October 3rd and are receiving this message, please contact us so that we may investigate your specific case.

If you have not yet applied, you may also use SMU's Online Application to apply for admission. Of course, SMU is happy to consider either The Common Application or SMU's Online Application — we will review your application equally, no matter which method you choose. The deadline to apply for Early Action and Early Decision I is quickly approaching – November 1, 2013 – so submit your application today!

I sincerely hope that SMU remains at the top of your college search list, and we look forward to learning more about you through your application. Should you have any questions about SMU or the application process, please reach out to our office. You can connect with your admission counselor here.

Pony Up!

Wes K. Waggoner
Dean of Undergraduate Admission
Executive Director of Enrollment Services

P.S. If you are already on SMU's mailing list, you have likely received a similar message from me with this information. If so, please accept my apologies. I'm pleased that you have taken the step of adding us to your Common Application list of colleges, and I wanted to make sure you knew about these challenges as soon as possible.

Sample Essay on an Ethical Dilemma

It's much harder to explain what sets apart a great essay from a mediocre one than it is to simply read a successful sample essay. Here's an essay that really does speak for itself, immediately bringing us along to experience the ethical dilemma that this student faced. Not only does she draw us into her struggle, but she comes out having made the best decision for herself and her school. While the topic can seem risky, it clearly conveys her strength of character and ability to realize how the decisions she makes can impact various lives. And which college wouldn't want those qualities on its campus?

I sat in my principal’s office along with two friends, wondering if I was making a serious mistake. My principal stared at us from across his desk and adjusted his glasses.

“Why are you all here?”

I hesitantly said, “We want to talk to you about plagiarism.”

One of our classmates, an extremely bright student capable of achieving excellent grades without cheating, had lifted a full lab report from the internet for our chemistry assignment. She was a friend of mine and we were often lab partners who enjoyed discussing the orbital distribution of electrons and the effects of a water molecule’s polarity. A week earlier I had sat at my desk reading her lab report, growing evermore frustrated and angry. The level of analysis in the report transcended anything she could have come up with on her own. No sophomore I knew could write as she had, and it did not appear to be written in her style. My classmates and I had spent hours upon hours working on the same report that we soon discovered she had simply copied and pasted from different websites.

I am a naturally empathetic person and pride myself on my loyalty to friends. I have made some great sacrifices on behalf of those close to me and initially wanted to keep this particular issue between me and my friend. When I approached her about this, she refused to listen to me. I suggested she simply re-do the report on her own and turn in a new draft, but she dismissed me. When I asked her again later to reconsider resolving this on her own, she accused me of ridiculous claims.

All the people I had asked for advice—my parents, my friends, even a teacher—had given me different suggestions. I’m not a confrontational person and try not to judge others, especially since I have made foolish mistakes in the past and have also at times stood on the sidelines in the face of injustice, waiting for someone else to step forward. But this plagiarism was so blatant, so in our faces, and our principal had just recently spoken to us about our honor code, which we felt would be relegated to a bankrupt phrase unless we, well, honored it here. Ultimately, my classmates and I agreed that school and the pressures to perform would turn into a charade if we ignored this.

As we sat in his office, we had to take our principal’s earlier discussion about moral dilemmas and apply it to an actual situation. If there is one thing in life I value most it is honesty. Each person has the responsibility to approach the many challenges he or she encounters with integrity—and just as important, each person has choice. My friend who had plagiarized was cheating her classmates, herself, and our school. And she was unwilling to listen to any of us, knowing that her grade would affect ours. So we made the difficult decision.

When our discussion with the principal came to an end, he said, “You were right to come to me.” Our classmate who had plagiarizedwas reprimanded and ultimately apologized to all of us.

“I’m sorry to have put you through that,” she later told me.

“I’m sorry, too.” Because even though I know we did the right thing, it didn’t always feel that way.
