Students Gaining Access to Admissions Files

stanfordThe admissions process has always been stressful, in large part due to the mysteriousness of the end results delivered in sealed envelopes or precisely-timed emails. According to a recent article by Richard Perez-Pena in The New York Times, some of the esoteric nature of the admissions process is finally being exposed, at least at one college. Due to a little-known federal law that has been around for years, some Stanford students have asked for copies of their admissions records, and the university has 45 days to comply with the request. Students then receive a complete copy of their files, including comments and recommendations, and some students have shared their findings on the internet, encouraging other students to do the same. While this is only available to students who have been admitted, the findings have still been surprising.

This effort is being led by a group of students who run an anonymous newsletter called the Fountain Hopper, and according to Lisa Lapin, spokeswoman for Stanford, the requests are increasing. As this becomes more widespread, the result may be that admissions officers become more careful with what they write, and students will gain greater insight into how admissions officers are evaluating applicants. As this point, according to a Fountain Hopper staff member, “The things they write, it’s clear that they never expect them to be read. They’re very frank.”

Harvey Mudd, Texas A&M, Auburn, and Brandeis Applications Available

In addition to dozens of other colleges updated today by College Essay Organizer, Harvey Mudd College's 2012-2013 Common App Supplement is now available, and its 2 required questions and 3 program-specific questions are available in College Essay Organizer.  Texas A&M University-College Station was also updated. It has two required questions, 1 optional, and 5 scholarship questions. Auburn University had 3 required questions and 3 optional questions.

Purdue University-West Lafayette, Stanford University and Brandeis Unviersity all had interesting additions, with Brandeis' new prompt being our favorite:

A package arrives at your door. After seeing the contents you know it’s going to be the best day of your life. What’s inside and how do you spend your day?

2012 College Admission Yields and Wait-List Offers Released

For those seniors wondering what their chances are of getting a wait-list offer to their dream school, this entry posted by The New York Times Choice Blog may give some insight. While the numbers are far from perfect, it may give an early indication of how many students will still be needed to fill up the class of 2016. Here are a few highlights:

Harvard’s yield has increased, again, to nearly 81 percent. This news parallels with its increased selectivity: Harvard accepted only 5.9 percent of its more than 34,000 applicants this year, making it slightly more selective than the 6.2 percent of applicants who were offered admission into the Class of 2015. Harvard anticipates that it will admit only 25 students from its waiting list.

Stanford (Calif.): With a yield of nearly 73.6 percent, this selective university has a yield that rivals the Ivy League. Unlike in years’ past, Stanford has no plans to admit any students from its wait list.

University of Chicago: Yield of 46.8 percent, a significant increase from 39.9 percent last year. The university is also admitting a record proportion of Latino and African-American students; 42 percent of the incoming class are students of color.

Stanford University Admissions: Come On Already

Good times at the Cardinal this year, with Stanford requiring the long Common App essay, the short Common App essay, three other 250+ word pieces of writing, and a series of short answers. Stanford, you are truly a world-class academic institution. One of the best, if not the best in the country. But we're looking at over 1500 words where our favorite stand-by Dartmouth got 'er done with less than a third of that.

Seriously this is the Stanford mascot. Just so you know.

This is the Stanford mascot. Seriously. Just so you know.

And the questions? They're a bit odd. Let's take a look and see if we can't give you a few ideas on how to crack 'em.

Besides the one-liners they require (which films and newspapers do you like, how do you best describe yourself, what's up with your summer vacation, etc.), Stanford asks what you find intellectually engaging, what you'd like your future roommate to know about you, and what makes Stanford a good place for you. They want about 250-300 words on each of those.

What makes this tricky is that at first they all seem like the same essay. What are you interested in and what makes you interesting can seem pretty similar. But if you remember that the goal of these pieces of writing is to emphasize what you do rather than who you are, you'll have no trouble banging these out.

Your intellectual interests should be straightforward enough - again, emphasize how you've applied them and what the results of those interests are. Your roommate might not want to know your intellectual interests, but rather your social or community interests. (See our blog post below on what not to do when talking about how awesome you are and you'll be fine here.)

Now for the kicker - why is Stanford a good place for you?

Well, why is it?

Again, think not about what the school has, or what it already knows about itself (this is definitely not a place to repeat what's in the guide book), but talk about what you're going to bring to the school and how it's going to affect the community there. This is part of The Deal we've written about before. You're not talking about what you like, but what you can do. Why are you going to be a vital part of this community? If you can identify that clearly, it will be evident why Stanford is a good match for you.
